Fall Fun With Your Dachshund: Treats, Costumes & Cozy Finds
There’s something about fall that just seems made for dachshunds.
Cooler walks. Cozy blankets. Crunchy leaves. Pumpkin everything. And, of course, the annual opportunity to dress a very opinionated little dog in a Halloween costume they absolutely did not request. 😂
While we spend a lot of time at Doxie Life Guide talking about health, training and the practical side of caring for these wonderfully long little dogs, sometimes it’s nice to simply have fun with them.
So grab your favorite blanket, pour yourself something warm, and let’s celebrate fall—dachshund style.
Dachshund Halloween Costumes That Are Just Too Cute
A dachshund’s unique shape makes them particularly well suited to some pretty hilarious Halloween costumes.
You certainly don’t need to dress your dog up for Halloween, but if your doxie enjoys the attention, here are a few ideas that practically beg for a photo.
The Classic Hot Dog
We have to start here.
Is dressing a dachshund like a hot dog predictable? Absolutely.
Does that make it any less adorable? Absolutely not.
A simple hot dog costume with a bun on either side and a squiggle of mustard down the back is basically a dachshund Halloween rite of passage.
A Little Pumpkin
A soft orange pumpkin costume is cute on just about any dog, but there is something particularly funny about a round pumpkin wrapped around a very long dachshund.
Add a little green stem hat—if your doxie will tolerate such indignity—and you've got yourself a Halloween card.
Bat Wings
This may be one of the easiest options for a dog who doesn't like wearing a full costume.
A lightweight set of black bat wings attached to a comfortable harness can give you the Halloween effect without covering your dachshund's entire body.
Black-and-tan dachshunds especially look suspiciously natural in bat wings.
Cowboy or Cowgirl
A bandana, a lightweight costume accessory and perhaps a tiny cowboy hat for approximately the three seconds your dachshund agrees to wear it.
That's really all you need.
Bonus points for a fall photo shoot with hay bales or pumpkins in the background.
The Long-Dog Costume
Taco. Dinosaur. Caterpillar. Dragon.
Anything that takes advantage of the dachshund's famously long silhouette is fair game.
Just remember that the best costume is one your dog can walk, see, hear and breathe comfortably in. Skip anything restrictive, heavy or easy to chew off, and never leave your dog unattended while they're wearing a costume.
And if your dachshund clearly hates the entire concept?
A festive bandana counts. 😂
🍪 Easy Pumpkin & Peanut Butter Dog Treats
Fall baking doesn't have to be only for the humans.
Pumpkin works beautifully in homemade dog treats, and this simple recipe uses ingredients you may already have in the pantry.
Pumpkin Peanut Butter Doxie Bites
You'll need:
1 cup plain canned pumpkin
1/2 cup natural peanut butter
2 eggs
About 2 1/2 cups old-fashioned oats, blended into oat flour
Important: Always check the peanut butter label and make sure it does not contain xylitol (also called birch sugar), which is toxic to dogs.
To make them:
Preheat your oven to 350°F.
Blend the oats in a food processor or blender until they have a flour-like consistency.
Mix the pumpkin, peanut butter and eggs together, then gradually add the oat flour until you have a workable dough. If it's particularly sticky, add a little more oat flour.
Roll the dough to roughly 1/4-inch thick and cut it into small shapes. A tiny bone or dachshund cookie cutter would obviously be adorable, but your dog will not judge your geometry.
Place the treats on a baking sheet and bake for approximately 20–25 minutes, or until they're firm and lightly browned around the edges.
Allow them to cool completely before serving.
Because these homemade treats don't contain preservatives, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator and use them within about a week, or freeze extras for later.
And remember: treats are still treats. Keep portions small—especially for our little long-backed friends where maintaining a healthy weight matters.
🍁 Cozy Fall Finds for Dachshund Lovers
One of the best parts of fall is making the house feel cozy again.
And if a dachshund happens to appear on a few of those decorations?
We consider that completely reasonable.
A Dachshund Fall Porch Sign
A seasonal porch sign featuring a doxie surrounded by pumpkins or autumn leaves is such an easy way to add a little personality to the front porch.
This is one of those decorations that can work from September straight through Thanksgiving, especially if you choose something more autumn-themed than strictly Halloween.
A Cozy Dachshund Throw
There is really no such thing as having too many blankets when you own a dachshund.
Your dog would probably agree.
A soft throw with a subtle dachshund print looks cute tossed over a sofa or chair—and will almost certainly become the dog's blanket approximately four minutes after you bring it home.
Fall Dachshund Pillows
A small seasonal pillow is an easy way to change the look of a room without redecorating the whole house.
Look for warm rust, olive, camel and cream colors with understated dachshund artwork if you want something that feels more cozy than kitschy.
A Fall Doxie Mug
Pumpkin spice tastes approximately 14% better when consumed from a dachshund mug.
We haven't conducted a scientific study on this.
We're comfortable with the claim anyway. 😉
Halloween Dachshund Décor
This is where you can have a little more fun.
Dachshunds dressed as ghosts, doxies surrounded by pumpkins, little skeleton-dog decorations or a long dog wearing a witch hat—there is no shortage of wonderfully ridiculous Halloween décor for dachshund people.
We'll eventually gather some of our favorite seasonal doxie finds into dedicated shopping guides, because this category is simply too fun to ignore.
🐾 Fall Adventures to Enjoy Together
You don't have to go anywhere elaborate to make fall feel special.
In fact, some of the best dachshund adventures are pretty simple.
Take a leisurely walk somewhere the leaves are changing. Find a dog-friendly pumpkin patch or outdoor market. Pack a blanket and spend an afternoon at the park. Take your doxie along for a fall camping weekend. Visit a dog-friendly patio before outdoor dining disappears for the winter.
Or simply spend an evening outside together while the weather is still comfortable.
Dachshunds don't know whether an outing belongs on somebody's bucket list.
They're usually just thrilled that they got invited.
As the days get shorter, it's also a good time to pull out reflective gear or a light for evening walks. And around fall gatherings, keep Halloween candy, chocolate, raisins, alcohol and other unsafe foods where curious little noses can't reach them.
📸 Create Your Own Fall Dachshund Photo Shoot
You definitely don't need a professional photographer or elaborate setup to get a great fall photo.
Try putting together a simple little scene with:
A plaid or chunky knit blanket
Two or three pumpkins
A basket or wooden crate
Colorful fall leaves
A simple bandana
Your dachshund
Natural outdoor light will do most of the work for you.
And here's the trick for getting that elusive dachshund actually looking at the camera photo:
Hold a favorite treat directly above your phone or camera.
Suddenly you become extremely interesting.
Take plenty of photos because the perfectly posed moment will probably be immediately followed by your dachshund knocking over a pumpkin, stealing the treat and leaving the set.
Those pictures are worth keeping, too.
🍂 Make a Little Fall Bucket List
Sometimes the easiest way to enjoy a season is to intentionally choose a few little things you want to do before it's gone.
Your dachshund's fall bucket list could be as simple as:
✓ Take a walk through the fall leaves
✓ Bake homemade pumpkin treats
✓ Take one ridiculously cute fall photo
✓ Have a cozy movie night under the blankets
✓ Visit somewhere new together
✓ Wear a Halloween costume—or firmly refuse to wear one
No pressure. No complicated plans.
Just a few excuses to spend a little extra time together.
Fall doesn't have to be elaborate to be memorable.
Bake a batch of pumpkin treats. Take the long way on your afternoon walk. Buy the ridiculous dachshund pumpkin decoration that makes you smile. Take too many pictures.
And when your doxie steals your favorite blanket and burrows underneath it for the evening?
Consider that the official beginning of cozy season.
Happy fall from Doxie Life Guide. 🐾🍂
Homemade treats should be given in moderation and may not be appropriate for every dog. If your dachshund has food allergies, dietary restrictions or a medical condition requiring a special diet, check with your veterinarian before introducing new ingredients.
